Supermarket/Cottage Pantry visit - 22 August

On Wednesday 22 August, the children in room 2 jumped on the bus and headed for the supermarket.
First we had a quick play on the playground and  all the children loved that!  Then we split into groups.  There were four groups.  2 groups went and saw the lovely ladies at the Cottage Pantry.  They told us about their packaging and gave us free brown bags and a lolly cake mix.  Their packaging is interesting because it has no pictures, but  has a window so you can see the product.  Their packaging can be all recycled.

At the supermarket we got to go out the back to see the crusher.  The crusher squashes all the cardboard boxes and then they make them into big heavy bales that we couldn't pick up, too heavy!  The cardboard gets recycled and made into other packaging.  The plastic gets recycled and made into buckets.  We were given a free fresh apple, that was very yummy!   We had to do a worksheet about packaging and recycling.

Thank you to the Cottage Pantry, Supervalue, the bus driver, the parent helpers and the teachers for a wonderful fun learning time.

Purple Groups Wakas - by Arabella

BY ARABELLA

The purple reading group had a story called "Build you own double waka" so they decided to build Waka.

1.  First you need to get two flax sticks about 20cm long
2.  Draw a sail shape on a piece of card.
3. Then get wire and wrap around the sticks at the front and at  the back.
4. Twist the rest of the wire to tie it.
5. Put a piece of wire over the cardboard sail and join it to the sticks
6.  Now test your waka!

Southern Rugby - under 8's final

I was very proud to watch the final in Ashburton last weekend. Although they did not win, the team played with enthusiasm and skill.  Solomon scored a good try and Jivarn was excellent on defence.
